At my local fleapit, the Kokusai cinema in Shinsekai, Osaka, they still get someone to paint the movie posters rather than just show the standard printed poster. The results are magnificently skewed, gorgeously wooden, and often funny. The main screen shows horror and thriller flicks, and next door there’s a basement porn cinema. The new posters they’ve painted seem to present the viewer with a choice between fellation and castration. I chose neither, spending the afternoon (and a very reasonable 600 yen, or five euros) at the tiny, blaring and garish pop kabuki theatre around the corner.
